High school is hellish in its own way, as one deals with the awkwardness of growing up, going through puberty, and so forth. That’s the premise of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism,” a new teen horror comedy that hits Prime Video just in time for the Halloween season. Based on Grady Hendrix‘s 2016 novel of the same name, the film follows two best friends, Abby and Gretchen, whose relationship gets tested by supernatural forces. After a sleepover at a friend’s parents’ cabin, Gretchen’s behavior gets erratic, suggesting she may have gotten possessed by an evil spirit. Is that the case, or is Gretchen merely undergoing a very extreme version of adolescent growing pains? Abby vows to find out and save her friend.

“My Best Friend’s Exorcism” stars “Eighth Grade” actress Elsie Fisher as Abby and Amiah Miller as Gretchen.  Cathy Ang, Rachel Ogechi Kanu, Clayton Royal Johnson, Christopher Lowell, and Erin Ownbey also star in the main cast.

Director Damon Thomas spoke to EW about the upcoming film, praising the performances of the two leads. “Elsie Fisher was in a great film titled “Eighth Grade,” and she was very much in our minds right at the beginning,” said Thomas. “She’s a very naturalistic actor; she feels very real, and she’s the anchor point of the movie in terms of, she’s the audience’s POV. I saw many, many, many auditions for Gretchen because you need to have someone who is the natural leader of the pack but also can ‘go there’ during the possession and really play those genre beats. I thought Amiah was brilliant. And she was scary on a Zoom!”

Thomas directs a screenplay by Jenna Lamia, who adapts Hendrix’s novel. Thomas is best known for his work on macabre, horror-adjacent TV shows, including “Killing Eve,” “Dracula,” and “Penny Dreadful.”

So, will Anna save Gretchen from whatever forces have her in their clutches? Find out when “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” hits Prime Video on September 30. Watch the trailer below.
