Mikey Madison In Talks To Replace Sydney Sweeney In A24’s Poe Adaptation ‘The Masque Of The Red Death’

Has Mikey Madison found her first role since her Oscar Best Actress win for Sean Baker‘s “Anora“? THR reports that she may have, and if she signs on for A24‘s “The Masque Of The Red Death,” she’ll replace another one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising actresses at the top of the cast sheet.

Madison is in talks to star in Charlie Polinger‘s upcoming Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, one of A24’s buzzier forthcoming projects, which once had Sydney Sweeney attached to star. Apparently, Polinger plans to refashion Poe’s tale to meme-able extremes: a sexed-up, super-decadent take on what’s already a grisly short story about class, power, and duplicity. If Madison signs on, she’ll star as twin sisters who come into the orbit of a mad prince after a plague devastates the local populace. One twin is a noblewoman, but the other, hidden among the lower class, enters the prince’s castle and finds herself thrust into a world of drugs, orgies, scheming, revenge, and beheadings, among other things. Picturestart produces the pic with A24 and distributes it worldwide.

“The Masque Of The Red Death” is the latest role Madison eyes since her Oscar win for “Anora.” She was briefly in talks to play a villain in Shawn Levy‘s upcoming “Star Wars” project “Starfighter,” and she’s also attached to star opposite Kirsten Duntz in “Reptilia,” a dirty Florida noir that features mermaids and the exotic animal trade. One would expect Madison to have more roles lined up three months after she won Best Actress, but she’s highly selective about what she stars in. Other notable roles for Madison include Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood” and 2022’s “Scream.”

As for “The Masque Of The Red Death,” Polinger plans to shoot at the end of 2025/start of 2026, so expect it in theaters by next Halloween. As for Sweeney, she dropped out of the movie due to scheduling conflicts with “Euphoria” Season 3 and Legendary‘s upcoming “Gundam” adaptation.

Stay tuned for more details about “The Masque Of The Red Death” moving forward.
