Inspired by the heroine created by “Conan” writer Robert E. Howard, and adapted by Roy Thomas for the Marvel comic book, Matilda Lutz stars in the live-action film as a barbarian huntress intent on taking down an evil tyrant. Alas, there’s no Conan here, but expect the vibes to be much like John Milius’ classic 1982 film (with a little Uwe Boll thrown in there for good measure).
Here’s an official “Red Sonja” synopsis courtesy of Millennium Media:
Enslaved by an evil tyrant who wishes to destroy her people, barbarian huntress Red Sonja must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against Dragan The Magnificent and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.
Along with Lutz, “Red Sonja” stars Martyn Ford, Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Michael Bisping, and Philip Winchester. Trevor Eve, Luca Pasqualino, and Rhona Mitra round out the main cast.
MJ Bassett directs from a script by Tasha Hou. Ali Lerner leads producers along with Joe Gatta, Yariv Lerner, Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon, Joey Soloway, and Luke Lieberman.
“Red Sonja” hits theaters on August 15 and digital VOD on August 29, courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films. Watch a trailer for the film below.
