'The Lesson' Trailer: Literary Noir Thriller With Richard E. Grant & Julie Delpy Premieres At Tribeca, Hits Theaters On July 7

Alice Troughton is a British TV director with credits under her belt like “Doctor Who,” “Atlantis,” “The Flash,” and “A Discovery Of Witches.” But for her feature directorial debut, “The Lesson,” in theaters next month, she spins a noir thriller that takes the adage of “don’t meet your heroes” to its most dangerous conclusion.

In “The Lesson,” an aspiring writer becomes a tutor for the family of literary giant J.M. Sinclair. But soon, it’s clear that his idol harbors secrets, lies, and a dark past not even the most imaginative writer could begin to fathom.

Here’s an official synopsis for “The Lesson,” courtesy of Bleecker Street:

Liam, an aspiring and ambitious young writer, eagerly accepts a tutoring position at the family estate of his idol, renowned author. But soon, Liam realizes that he is ensnared in a web of family secrets, resentment, and retribution. Sinclair, his wife Hélène, and their son Bertie all guard a dark past, one that threatens Liam’s future as well as their own. As the lines between master and protégé blur, class, ambition, and betrayal become a dangerous combination in this taut noir thriller.

“The Lesson” stars Daryl McCormack as Liam, Richard E. Grant as Sinclair, Julie Delpy as Hélène, and Stephen McMillan as Liam.  Crispin Letts rounds out the main cast.
