Mia Hanson-Løve already had success at the Cannes Film Festival before, with a Special Jury prize victory in 2009 when “Father Of My Children” screened in the Un Certain Regard section. Now, after yet another successful Cannes debut with her latest film, “Bergman Island,” the film is heading to various fall festivals and eventually to a theater near you this fall.

And as seen in the new trailer for “Bergman Island,” the film looks to play to Hanson-Løve’s strength: a relationship drama centered on a filmmaking couple whose trip to Ingmar Bergman‘s Fårö Island causes fiction and reality to blur and their relationship to unravel. Given Hanson-Løve’s history, there’s likely some autobiography afoot here, too (more on that later).
Here’s the official synopsis from Cannes:
Over the course of one summer, a filmmaker couple settles down to write on the Swedish island of Fårö, where Bergman lived and found inspiration. As their respective scripts progress, they come in contact with the wild landscapes of the place, souvenirs of a first love resurface, and the lines between fiction and reality blur, tearing the couple apart.
“Bergman Island” stars Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska, and Anders Danielsen Lie. Joel Spira, Clara Strauch, and Matthew Lessner round out the main cast.

Hanson-Løve’s latest looks to take inspiration from a trip she and her ex-partner, fellow director Olivier Assayas, took to Fårö. The couple, who had been together from 2002 to 2017 and worked on multiple projects together over the years, broke up shortly before Hanson-Love started production on “Bergman Island.”
An even more intriguing note: Denis Lenoir, longtime cinematographer for both Assays and Hanson-Løve, returns to work with Hanson-Løve for this film. They last worked together on 2016’s “Things To Come,” which won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival that year. Lenoir also shot Assaya’s latest effort, 2019’s “Wasp Network” for Netflix.
