'Humane': Caitlin Cronenberg Makes Her Feature Debut With A Thriller About Global Environmental Collapse That Stars Jay Baruchel

Another member of the Cronenberg family has a movie on the way. Deadline reports that Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of David and sister of Brandon, just wrapped shooting on her feature directorial debut in Ontario, entitled “Humane.” And the film’s plot? Kind of in the family’s wheelhouse: a thriller about a wealthy family reckoning months after a global environmental collapse.

Here’s Deadline’s take on the plot of “Humane”:

Humane takes place over a single day months after a global environmental collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman invites his four grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.

“Humane” stars Jay BaruchelEmily Hampshire and Peter Gallagher.  Sebastian ChaconAlanna Bale, and Sirena Gulamgaus round out the film’s main cast.

Cronenberg directs a script by Michael Sparaga, who also produces “Humane” through Victory Man Productions. “From my very first read, the all-too-possible dystopian world of Michael’s script left me breathless, and I immediately knew I had to be the one to make this movie,” Cronenberg said about the movie. While Cronenberg has made music videos and shorts in the past, including 2021’s “The Death Of David Cronenberg,” “Humane” is her first foray into feature films.

Sparaga also sang praise for Cronenberg in a press release for the film. ““Her keen eye to detail, her rich compositions, and her ability to convey deep emotion made her my first and only choice to direct “Humane,”” said Sparaga. “That she said yes to making this film her feature directorial debut is nothing less than a dream come true.”

“Humane” boasts same crew from Caitlin’s father’s most recent movie, “Crimes Of The Future,” including cinematographer Doug Koch and casting director Dierdre Bowen.

No word on a release date yet for “Humane.” As for other members of the Cronenberg family, David’s next film is “The Shrouds,” a “very personal project” with Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassell. As for Brandon, his upcoming thriller “Infinity Thriller,” with Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth should hit the festival circuit next year. That film, about a rich couple that encounters danger at an island resort, received an NC-17 rating from the MPA, sparking controversy. Expect it to be re-cut for an R-rating before its world premiere.
