‘Heat 2’: Michael Mann Says First Draft Of Script Delivered To Warner Bros.

We’ve been dying to see Michael Mann‘s (“Tokyo Vice”) long-gestating “Heat 2,” a sequel to the 1995 crime thriller “Heat” (a feature remake of the TV film/pilot “L.A. Takedown“), which saw a crew of high-end thieves go up against the L.A.P.D. after a daytime armored truck robbery puts them on the radar of a ruthless cop looking to take them down after killing three security guards.

Mann was recently speaking with Vulture about the legacy of his fantastic James Cann crime flick “Thief” when the subject briefly switched to the status on “Heat 2,” where the filmmaker confirmed that a finished first draft of a script has been delivered to Warner Bros., who just happened to have released the original movie back in 1995.

“I just finished the screenplay and handed in the first draft,” Mann said of the status of the sequel. “In this case, it was Warner Brothers. Any more than that, I can’t talk about. But it’s an exciting project.”

The film version of “Heat 2” could be slightly different from the recent novelization that Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner, as Mann has hinted previously that the feature incarnation of the story could go beyond the sequel novel. That book moves between the years of 1988, 1995–96, and 2000. Those years would call for new actors to play homicide detective Vincent Hanna and criminals Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis.

This globetrotting sequel is expected to move the setting out of Los Angeles, with multiple locations in North America, South America, and Southeast Asia.

Names such as Adam Driver (who worked with Mann on “Ferrari”) and rising star Austin Butler have been reportedly circling roles in “Heat 2,” but nothing official has been announced concerning the cast. With that said, we’re unexpected to see Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer reprise their roles (although, we can’t completely rule out “minor” participation by the original actors).
