Arnaud Desplechin’s ‘The Thing That Hurts’ Taps Felicity Jones, Jason Schwartzman, André Holland, Alfre Woodard, J.K. Simmons, Noémie Merlant & More, Wes Anderson To Exec Produce

Wes Anderson is set to executive-produce an English-language film from veteran French filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin, who has enlisted a rather impressive cast for the next feature, “The Thing That Hurts.” Bulgarian producer/screenwriter Kamen Velkovsky and Desplechin penned the script, which sees a group of patients paying their respects to their late American psychoanalyst in Paris.

That lineup of actors will consist of Felicity Jones (“The Brutalist”), Jason Schwartzman (“Asteroid City”), André Holland (“The Dutchman”), Alfre Woodard (“The Book Of Clarence”), J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), Noémie Merlant (“Tár”), Golshifteh Farahani (“Extraction 3”), and Teddie Allen (“MobLand”).

A logline from the Deadline report gives us better insight into what to expect:

“The film centers on a group of patients who converge in Paris following the death of their renowned American psychoanalyst. What begins as a gathering to honor her memory evolves into an intimate reckoning, as unexpected connections emerge and long-buried truths surface, revealing the profound and lasting influence the therapist had on each of their lives.”

We cannot rule out more talent joining the film, as filming has kicked off in France (“The Thing That Hurts” will shoot in Paris and Brussels, Belgium), but we wouldn’t be surprised if they try to squeeze in more local actors (from France and Belgium). This is a very exciting collaboration, with Desplechin and Anderson joining forces on this film, so we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it and sharing updates when we can.

Desplechin is coming off “Two Pianos,” the French drama starring François Civil and Charlotte Rampling, heading to U.S. theaters on May 1 (produced by Velkovsky). Other impressive credits under his belt include multiple releases screened at the Cannes Film Festival, such as acclaimed titles like “My Golden Days, “Filmlovers!,” “Brother & Sister,” “Ismaël’s Ghosts,” “Oh Mercy!,” and “Deception.”
