After the billion-dollar success of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Marvel‘s first mutant-focused MCU outing and R-rated effort, audiences have been extremely curious when the merc-with-a-mouth could be back on the big screen. Ryan Reynolds isn’t going as far as to share those details just yet, but he has revealed he’s been constantly in contact with Marvel Studios/Kevin Feige and might be sharing notes/consulting on other projects the studio is cooking up.
While promoting the fifth season of his FX reality sports show “Welcome to Wrexham,” Reynolds spoke with Collider about what is currently happening with himself over at Marvel Studios and while not in a massive rush to make the next “Deadpool” installment (expected to be another team-up), he does often check-in with the studio about other things they’re working, even if he’s not going to star in them.
“I’ve talked to Marvel off and on, always. We have a really great relationship, you know? It’s always a conversation. I’m always just looking to be additive and help on anything, even if it’s not a movie I’m in. And I’m always writing. I mean, it’s how I kind of get it out of my system. I love writing. That character and that world is one in which anything is possible, and that in and of itself allows for so much freedom and storytelling.”
“I have a few things written that I love. I don’t know. We’ll figure out when the time is right. I’m not in any huge rush right now to do anything…Deadpool works best on both scarcity and surprise, so jumping right back into it full on right now is probably something I’m not going to do…I gotta say, that Marvel team, those guys have been incredible, all of them, and I’m really, really lucky to have the opportunity to work with them the way I have, as intimately as I have,” Reynolds said of his ongoing collaborative experience with the folks at Marvel.
After some minor teases on social media that have led to speculation of Wade Wilson showing up in projects like “Avengers: Doomsday” (boasts an already stacked and massive cast of “Avengers” and “X-Men” franchise actors) and the follow-up “Avengers: Secret Wars,” we’re going have to be patient about how a “Deadpool 4” or whatever they title the next film fits into the greater MCU with an “X-Men” reboot on the horizon and rumblings of an MCU reset after “Secret Wars.”
We’ll just have to continue to be patient since Reynold is indicating here in these new quotes that there is writing work going on, even if we’re not being made aware of what that will look like anytime soon, as he’s sort of telegraphing that fans are in for a wait. With that said, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that an “X-Force” revival could be in the cards alongside Wade teaming up with Canadian mutant team Alpha Flight or sharing screentime with fellow meta Marvel character, She-Hulk (played by fellow Canadian, Tatiana Maslany).
