‘The Roman’: Betty Gilpin, Alec Baldwin & David Costabile Added To Martin Scorsese-Produced Las Vegas Series Led By Oscar Isaac

Netflix and Martin Scorsese (“Boardwalk Empire”) are reuniting after working together on the mobster event film “The Irishman,” with the beloved filmmaker executive producing the Las Vegas-set casino series “The Roman,” which will be led by actor Oscar Isaac (plays Bobby Red, the casino president at The Roman), as the streaming service has announced more additions to the show’s cast.

Those names confirmed from an announcement made by Netflix yesterday include Betty Gilpin (“Nurse Jackie,” “GLOW”) in the role of Bobby’s formidable wife, Marla Blake, and Alec Baldwin (“The Departed”) taking on the part of Primo, a father figure to Bobby. Lastly, David Costabile (“Breaking Bad,” “13 Hours”) is inhabiting a conflicted character named Bill Saverick, who is both a rival and a longtime friend to Bobby.

If you weren’t already aware, the anticipated project comes from creators/showrunners/executive producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien (“Billions”), who made their screenwriting debut with the Matt Damon and Edward Norton underground NYC-set poker thriller “Rounders,” and would go on to pen Steven Soderbergh‘s heist thriller “Ocean’s Thirteen.” So, they’re no strangers to the world of gambling and casinos.

An official logline for “The Roman” courtesy of Netflix:

Set in the high-stakes, sharp-elbowed present-day Las Vegas casino business, which is a modernized but still dangerous version of the legendary city. At the center of it all stands Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, president of the hottest hotel casino in town, who has to make some long odds moves to try and secure his position and take more ground.

That’s not it, as J.C. Chandor, who previously helmed Isaac’s “Triple Frontier” and “A Most Violent Year,” is going to be helming the first two episodes of “The Roman.” A combination of creatives and talent that should make the casino series one to keep our eyes on and we wouldn’t be all that shocked if more big names are added to the lineup.
