Duffer Bros. Say ‘Stranger Things’ Spinoff Features All “New Characters” & An Ensemble Again With “Completely New Story”

With the “Stranger Things” fifth and final season done (the finale debuting on New Year’s Eve), the Duffer Brothers are moving on to other things, including a new spinoff set in the same universe. As the creative sibilings have teased new details about the gestating Netflix project in a new interview with Josh Horowitz on his popular industry podcast, “Happy Sad Confused.”

The Duffer Brothers told Horowitz, not only is their “Stranger Things” spinoff (the two admitting they’re co-creating it) going to feature all new characters, but will attempt to keep the ensemble angle of the previous series. So, perhaps those expecting that previous cast to carry over to these spinoff adventures, that likely isn’t in the cards, just yet.

“Although, and I just want to emphasize, because I just don’t want people’s expectations to be incorrect. It’s not a spinoff about exactly focused on the origin of ‘The Rock’ or focused on the origin of ‘The Mind Flayer.’ There are explanations, but it’s really its own story with its own mythology,” Matt Duffer said.

When directly asked if the spinoff would be another ensemble, Ross Duffer responded with, “Yeah, it’s going to be an ensemble, again, I think ultimately it is its own story and new characters of mythology, but a lot of the style of storytelling that we’ve done for 10 years now in ‘Stranger Things,’ that is something that will carry over. Even though it is, you know, [a] completely new story.”

This comes after the brothers confirmed that their ambitious series take on “The Talisman” for Netflix and Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin is no longer moving forward, which isn’t terribly shocking since Amblin has been trying to adapt the Stephen King novel for decades without success. With that project off their plate, it certainly gives them more focus on other things, like their “Stranger Things” spinoff series.

As alluded to at the top, the final season of “Stranger Things” can be streamed exclusively on Netflix, and on January 12, a making-of special called “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 Documentary” will also be available to watch.
