Filmmaker Andrew Niccol is finally moving forward with his long-gestating sequel to the 2005 film “Lord of War,” as production on the follow-up “Lords of War” is set to begin later this month (shooting in Belguim and Morocco) and we’ve learned two more actors have joined the sequel’s cast with Sylvia Hoeks (“Blade Runner 2049,” “The Girl in The Spider’s Web”) and Greg Tarzan Davis (“Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning,” “Top Gun: Maverick”).
A crime flick about international gunrunning with comedic elements (sometimes even satirical), the original 2005 film starring Nicolas Cage as Yuri Orlov was loosely inspired by various gunrunners such as Viktor “Merchant of Death” Bout, who was recently released from a U.S. prison in an exchange that featured WNBA star Brittney Griner, released by the Russian government. In the sequel, we’ll see the film explore Yuri’s son, Anton, played by Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård (“John Wick 4”); Laura Harrier is also among the cast.

In the original movie, Yuri goes from failed restaurateur to successful international gunrunner, selling weapons to anyone with the cash to pay for them, avoiding Interpol agents and other law enforcement while trying to stay one step ahead of his deadly competition and some of his unhappy buyers, who end up killing his drug-addicted brother, played by Jared Leto.
We can also share an official logline for “Lords of War” courtesy of Vendôme Pictures:
In “Lords of War,” Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, discovers he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who isn’t trying to right his father’s wrongs – he’s trying to top them. Not only selling guns but the “trigger pullers” too, Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This is the story of Yuri and Anton’s bitter rivalry, even at odds over the same woman. Who will prevail when father and son go to war? Lord of War’s Yuri Orlov is a composite character based on numerous arms dealers.
Vendôme is fully financing “Lords of War,” while FilmNation Entertainment is representing the international sales rights, and CAA Media Finance is overseeing the domestic rights at the American Film Market. Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi (“CODA”), who produced the original, are producing via Vendôme, alongside Cage under his company, Saturn Films. Skarsgård is also set as an executive producer.
Stay tuned, as we’ll likely hear more about casting additions and when we can expect “Lords of War” to hit theaters in the near future.
