Another impressive grouping of actors is being put together for another high-profile project heading to the European Film Market with “The Smack” (a great film title, right?), which hails from director David M. Rosenthal (co-wrote the script with Keith Kjarval) and is based on the 2017 novel authored by Richard Lange.
A new report from Deadline has revealed that Oscar winners Casey Affleck (“Manchester By The Sea”), Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri”), Kathy Bates (“Misery”), and Marisa Tomei (“My Cousin Vinny,” “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead”) have been enlisted for main roles.

They also added a brief synopsis for “The Smack”:
“The story follows a down-on-his-luck conman (Affleck) who teams up with a casino waitress to execute a high-stakes con targeting a hidden cache of stolen U.S. military cash. What starts off as an easy plan spirals into a deadly game as they collide with dangerous criminals chasing the same score.”
Mister Smith is now handling sales at EFM and is being funded through Concourse Media‘s (boarding worldwide sales, too) sister company, Archetype Media Finance. Also, Unified Pictures‘ Kjarval is producing “The Smack” alongside Rockwell and Mark Berger of Play Hooky (“Of Mice and Men”), and Sugar Rush Pictures‘ Andrea Bucko (“Tin Soldier”) with executive producers Matthew Shreder and Kristin Harris.
Back in 2022, “1883” actress Isabel May was linked to an undisclosed role in the film by THR when Affleck was first attached, but sadly, she wasn’t mentioned in the new casting update, which may mean May is no longer involved and/or another actress is being courted for that part.
Rosenthal’s previous feature directing credits include the action-thriller “How It Ends” and the “Jacob’s Ladder” remake. The heist thriller is expected to see cameras set to roll in New Jersey sometime later in the year.
