DC fans haven’t seen a solo “Supergirl” feature film on the big screen since the less-than-stellar 1984 outing, but “House of the Dragon” actress Milly Alcock and director Craig Gillespie are behind the latest reboot of the Kryptonian heroine (after Sasha Calle played a variant of her in “The Flash“)
A big tidbit mentioned in a new profile with the actress at Variety reveals what we’ve long suspected would be happening. Alcock is officially set to reprise Kara again in James Gunn’s “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow,” which was confirmed by DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, stating, “She’s a major part of what we’re doing.”

“I am so excited for all the young women who are going to see this, that’s really going to get me…What Kara was going through that I was going through is that she’s someone who has been at war with themselves. And I think that’s a very universal feeling, especially for women,” Alcock told Variety. “So it’s been a really surprising journey. I never thought taking on a superhero film would do that. But it has! And what a beautiful thing.”
A logline for “Supergirl” courtesy of WB:
When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
“Man of Tomorrow” is currently filming in Atlanta and is starting to feel more like a DCU “Justice League” installment than a run-of-the-mill solo film, after Alcock and Aaron Pierre‘s addition to the lineup (playing Green Lantern hero John Stewart in the HBO Max series “Lanterns“). However, despite unverified internet rumors, Gunn, back in January, had publicly denied (via Threads) their intention to cast new Wonder Woman and Batman actors for the next chapter in the “Superman” saga.
This isn’t entirely a shocking development, given that Kara was first introduced at the end of “Superman” (alongside her deep comic book ties to the sequel’s new villain Brainiac) and her solo film features Jason Momoa (former “Aquaman” and “Justice League” actor from the Snyderverse) as the DCU take on alien bounty hunter Lobo, a well-established Supes baddie.
Lobo is another crossover character that we can envision eventually making his way to Earth and also landing his own solo film (after directors Guy Ritchie and Michael Bay tried to get one off the ground long before the formation of DC Studios). If Momoa were to be added to the call sheet of “Man of Tomorrow” as well, that also would be something unsurprising to us. Then again, he’d also be a great character to use for a third “Suicide Squad” film if they had the energy to get that one going.
“Supergirl” is set to hit theaters on June 26, and we’ll have to wait to see if a sequel is going to be rushed into development as the DCU keeps expanding alongside new solo films for “Wonder Woman” and Batman with “The Brave & The Bold.” Others among the cast include Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and a minor appearance from David Corenswet.
