This summer, Netflix is behind an extremely exciting remake series: “Human Vapor,” an upcoming modern Japanese/Korean remake of the 1960 Toho Studios and Ishirō Honda film “The Human Vapor.” A supernatural thriller that features a killer who can transform into what the title suggests, vapor, making him very hard to capture by law enforcement (feels like a twist on the H.G. Wells book and Universal Monsters film “The Invisible Man”).
The Japanese-language series, directed by Shinzo Katayama (“Gannibal”), hails from Korean showrunner/co-writer Yeon Sang-ho, best known to western audiences for directing the fantastic zombie flick “Train to Busan” and its follow-up, “Peninsula.” He’s also behind the upcoming zombie outbreak thriller “Colony,” which will screen at the Cannes Film Festival.
An official synopsis for the new genre series via Netflix:
After a person spontaneously explodes on a live TV, the mysterious Human Vapor uses his gaseous form to evade capture and terrorize the nation.
Another interesting angle here is that Shirogumi is handling the impressive-looking visual effects. This Oscar-winning team previously worked on “Godzilla Minus One,” another Toho project, and is expected to return for the sequel, “Godzilla Zero One,” coming to U.S. theaters this fall.
The cast features Shun Oguri, Yū Aoi, Suzu Hirose, Kento Hayashi, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Uta Uchida. You can view the new teaser for “Human Vapor” below, as the show debuts on July 2, 2026.
