‘Bloodborne’ R-Rated Animated Movie In The Works At Sony, Based On Gothic Fantasy Horror Video Game [CinemaCon]

Another big Sony Pictures feature film project was announced this week during the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, and it will be a new R-rated animated film based on the PlayStation and FromSoftware video game property, “Bloodborne.”

Lyrical Animation‘s parent company, Lyrical Media, is set to co-finance the feature adaptation with Sony, and unsurprisingly, is produced by PlayStation Productions and creator/gamer Seán McLoughlin (better known by his pseudonym JackSepticEye).

The Japanese game, hailing from writer and director Hidetaka Miyazaki, is a Gothic fantasy horror hack-and-slash released back in 2015 for the PlayStation 4, and is sort of in the vein of other similar titles in the genre like “Dark Souls.” You play a protagonist who hunts and kills a slew of various monsters and supernatural creatures. Miyazaki was also behind games such as “Dark Souls,” “Demon Souls,” “Sekiro,” and “Elden Ring,” the latter of which is getting a feature adaptation from A24 and director Alex Garland (“Civil War”).

An official logline for “Bloodborne” from PlayStation:

Hunt your nightmares as you search for answers in the ancient city of Yharnam, now cursed with a strange endemic illness spreading through the streets like wildfire. Danger, death, and madness lurk around every corner of this dark and horrific world, and you must discover its darkest secrets in order to survive.

Of course, Sony is no stranger to producing video game adaptations with a live-action streaming series version of their recent Norse mythology-focused “God of War” games on the horizon for Prime Video, the Peacock streaming series “Twisted Metal,” they have a third season of “The Last of Us” at HBO Max, wrapped on a new “Resident Evil” film from writer/director Zach Cregger (“Weapons”) hitting screens on September 18, have been trying to get an “Uncharted” sequel going with Tom Holland returning as Nathan Drake, and recently hired new directors for their “Metal Gear Solid” film, which has been in development for ages at the studio.

Sony/PlayStation Productions is also working together on the off-world actioner “Helldivers” based on the game of the same name, directed by Justin Lin (“Star Trek Beyond”), starring Jason Momoa (“Street Fighter,” “A Minecraft Movie”), and that is coming to theaters next fall.

Given Sony’s recent track record with Sony Animation projects such as “KPop Demon Hunters” and the trilogy of “Spider-Verse” movies, seeing them tackle an R-rated property in the animation space feels like the studio feeling out the general audience’s appetite for more mature animated adaptations. Who they end up getting to voice “Bloodborne” is likely going to be just as important as the creative team they hire to make it.
