‘Pluribus’ Creator Vince Gilligan Believes He Couldn’t Have Attempted His New Sci-Fi Mystery Series 5-10 Years Ago

TV guru Vince Gilligan of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” fame is heading back to the small screen with his new original series “Pluribus” on Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+), starring actress Rhea Seehorn (reuniting with Gilligan after a breakout performance as the main female actress in “Saul”). But as Gilligan tells it, the timing for the new sci-fi mystery show couldn’t have been better, as he says he couldn’t have made “Pluribus” a decade ago, and explains why.

Speaking with the folks over at GamesRadar+, Gilligan said that the new project is much bigger than previous efforts for good reason, as he alludes to his experiences over that previous decade with the “Breaking Bad” projects, teaching himself and producers how to tackle such an ambitious series. Admittedly, he says he wouldn’t have even “attempted or succeeded” to make “Pluribus” 5-10 years ago, given the show’s scope and scale.

“I know, 10 years ago, I couldn’t have made this show. Because this show is bigger than anything I’ve ever made before,” Gilligan stated to the outlet. “The scope of it is globetrotting, world-spanning,” Gilligan continued. “I think we’ve learned, my producers and I, together, to be better producers over the years…The size of this thing is not something we would have attempted or could have succeeded at maybe 5 or 10 years ago.”

We should point out that Gilligan is no stranger to the world of sci-fi or big-time TV projects, having been a part of the wild success of Fox‘s seminal hit “The X-Files” (also spearheading the subsequent spinoff show “The Lone Gunmen“). An assumption could be made that some tough lessons were certainly learned there about telling various sci-fi stories for television, and Gilligan obviously had the chops to tackle a captivating crime dramedy, which grew over the years to become bigger and better as the prequel “Better Call Saul” had some leaps and bounds over its run, as well.

As expectations couldn’t be higher, the two-episode premiere of “Plurbius” is set for November 7 on Apple TV, with nine episodes total for the new original Gilligan project.
