‘Star Wars’: Rick Famuyiwa Was Developing Mystery Disney+ Series That Is Stuck In “Limbo”

With Kathleen Kennedy‘s exit from Lucasfilm now official, there is some new information about a would-be “Star Wars” series that likely isn’t going to make it to the finish line. As it’s been revealed that director Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope”), who had helmed episodes of both “The Mandalorian” (in all three seasons, mind you) and “Ahsoka,” has been quietly working on his own series for Disney+.

That report on the mysterious Famuyiwa “Star Wars” TV project comes from The Wrap, although details on the show itself and the premise are scarce at the moment, but it is said to be stuck in “limbo.”

This isn’t exactly unheard of, as “Rangers of the New Republic” was also scrapped from the development stage because of a multitude of reasons, including the firing of Gina Carano (Cara Dune was being teed up as a major lead on the show) and the pivot to the “Ahsoka” spinoff. Interestingly enough, Famuyiwa directed key episodes of “The Mandalorian” that featured comedian/actor Bill Burr‘s breakout ex-Imperial soldier turned mercenary, Migs Mayfeld, who fans had hoped would either join the “Rangers” spinoff or get his own show.

It has been a while since a new live-action “Star Wars” series has been announced as “Ahsoka” recently wrapped filming on the second season, Jon Favreau‘s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie was shot ahead of plans for the fourth season of “Mando,” and for the moment there doesn’t seem to be too much interest in pursuing new seasons of The High Republic era show “The Acolyte” or “Skeleton Crew” (despite calls online from dedicated fans for their continuation).

Also, it was mentioned Lucasfilm had been working on two “Indiana Jones” shows as well, with an animated one from Rodrigo Blaas and a live-action prequel that would have focused on Jones’ mentor Abner Ravenwood (father of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” female lead Marion Ravenwood). We have to imagine those projects won’t be moving forward either, as Lucasfilm failed to update the outlet on their current status.

What isn’t exactly clear after this Lucasfilm studio head shake-up is how Famuyiwa factors into the future of “Star Wars” or if he’ll ultimately get his own show.
