A while back, writer/director Zach Cregger and Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin were teaming up for the original sci-fi film “The Flood,” but the project originally set up at Netflix would pivot to New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., with a release date announced last week at CinemaCon for August 11, 2028.
What we missed were some plot details on the mysterious Cregger project from the horror-obsessed folks over at Dread Central, who claim the feature is going to be similar to Ridley Scott‘s “Alien” by having a crew set off-world interacting with a non-human entity/artifact.
Here’s how the outlet is describing the next Cregger original film:
“It’s very ‘Alien’-esque, following a deep-space captain who leads her crew to investigate a cryptic signal from a distant world, only to uncover an alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their sanity, forcing them into a confrontation with an incomprehensible intelligence.”
“I’m incredibly excited to continue my partnership with Mike, Pam, Richard, and the teams at Warner Bros. and New Line. They are true champions of bold creativity, united by a shared ambition to deliver unforgettable theatrical experiences for audiences. That’s the dream for any filmmaker,” Cregger said in an official statement (via THR) about reuniting with the studio for “The Flood” after working with them on last year’s “Weapons.”
That’s not it for Cregger as he’s wrapped on Sony Pictures‘ latest reboot of the “Resident Evil” franchise with that video game adaptation heading to theaters on September 18, 2026 (we have to imagine we’ll have a trailer between now and San Diego Comic-Con), and is set to release his “Weapons” spinoff, “Gladys” on September 8, 2028 with Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Amy Madigan back in the creepy role of Aunt Gladys.
Those release dates for “Gladys” and “The Flood” would indicate that cameras could begin rolling on both sometime in 2027, with the latter expected to happen first.
What is likely next for “The Flood” is that Cregger will have to assemble his crew for this spaceship flick, which may end up including actors he’s previously worked with, as Austin Abrams took meaty roles in both “Weapons” and “Resident Evil.” We wouldn’t be entirely shocked if a veteran actor like Josh Brolin (“The Dog Stars”), who had a key role in “Weapons,” ends up being recruited for a part in “The Flood,” but that’s simply because we could easily picture the gruff actor playing one of these off-world adventurers. With that said, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for more updates on the sci-fi movie in the very near future.
