‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Considering “Alternative Reality” Angle For Sequel Or Anthology Series To Avoid One Wish Willow “Plot Hole”

The new horror film “Obsession” from writer/director Curry Barker opened over the weekend and ended up not only being embraced by critics and audiences alike, but the smaller-budgeted film also managed to make a decent amount of money at the box office with a number hovering around $21 million, which is very impressive given the movie is said to have only cost around $1 million, possibly even less, to make.

With that kind of return and critical acclaim for the Blumhouse/Focus Features pic, the sequel/world-building talk has already started, and Barker, speaking with Total Film (via Deadline), has suggested he may end up tackling a sequel or an anthology series. However, he’s quite aware of the “plot hole” element that he’s created for himself from the jump and explains how they might attempt to get around the One Wish Willow angle by possibly thrusting wish makers into an alternative reality (so wishes aren’t all happening together at once and creating havoc).

“I mean, it’s kind of a plot hole. It’s something I don’t like to think about too much, because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes,” Barker told Total Film after an “Obsession” screening. “It really doesn’t make any sense at all.” Barker continued, “If the One Wish Willow actually works, which it does in this lore, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy, like, dragons would exist. And none of that. The world is pretty normal from what we see in this movie. So, it doesn’t really make sense…Here’s my take: every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality where their wish comes true, so you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time. And that’s why, but that doesn’t make sense because the money falls from the ceiling. Yeah, it’s broken.”

However, fans of the film might have to wait a bit as the on-the-rise horror director has already been enlisted by A24 to help them relaunch the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise with yet another reboot film. The studio is also aiming to get a series going as well, with “Strange Darling” helmer JT Mollner and Glen Powell attaching themselves to that iteration. That’s not it, as A24 is also tackling another iconic slasher property with the “Friday the 13th” prequel series “Crystal Lake” starring Linda Cardellini (“DTF St. Louis”) as the new Pamela Voorhees (the original killer of the horror IP, who takes deadly revenge on the summer camp staff after her special needs son, Jason, drowns due to negligence).

Barker is certainly giving off a similar vibe to Zach Cregger when he gave audiences “Barbarian,” so, hopefully, there could be more original projects and these potential world-building sequels happening in the future for the filmmaker. That’s if he’s able to get off the studio IP train to get a breather, as we suspect “Texas Chainsaw” won’t be the only studio offer he’ll be getting in the future.

Anywho, you can view that exchange between Barker and Total Film below.
