There is a lot of buzz surrounding the performance of Timothée Chalamet in his latest film, “Marty Supreme,” which debuted at the New York Film Festival, where he plays a table tennis prodigy (the actor revealing he started training for those scenes back in 2018), looking to make the big time and become famous any way he can.
Some quotes from Chalamet on the film, speaking with interviewer Margaret Gardiner (via Pop Crave, as original YouTube link deleted) and The Hollywood Reporter, are raising some eyebrows; the former are turning some heads online as they come off as a tad braggadocious (potentially channelling his extremely confident character in the film?)

“This is probably my best performance, and it’s been like 7, 8 years that I’ve been handing in really, really committed top-of-the-line performances. It’s important to say it out loud because the discipline and the work ethic I’m bringing to these things…I don’t want people to take it for granted….This is really some top-level s***,” the actor told Gardiner in the now-deleted YouTube video.
Could this kind of bizarre talk hurt or ding Chalamet’s awards chances? We’ll have to wait and see, as we’ve seen larger, more serious derailments in the past. One of the recent examples of that was “Emilia Pérez” actress Karla Sofía Gascón being exposed for a string of hateful social media posts, including one about co-star Selena Gomez, leading the cast, director, and Netflix to distance themselves running up to this year’s ceremony.
Meanwhile, Chalamet told THR back in October, explaining how he sees himself in Marty (maybe slightly downplaying his perceived privileged background more than some would like to see), “Some people are fortunate enough to stumble into their success or be passive about their pursuit of whatever they want to do in life. That wasn’t it for me. For me, it was putting in the 10,000 hours. It was dropping out of college. It was taking a risk. It was pursuing projects that were untraditional at first. At the time, it was kind of radical, the choices I was making when I was 20. In a sense, the story of Marty Mauser is really comparative, and so I was deeply moved by it.”
A24 is gearing up to release “Marty Supreme” in theaters on Christmas Day, as the pic hailing from director Josh Safdie, who co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein, is expected to become a project to keep an eye on during award season and could earn Chalamet back-to-back Best Actor Oscar nominations (after playing folk singer Bob Dylan in James Mangold‘s “A Complete Unknown“).
