Prime Video did a rather good job with the first season of their “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and with a second season in the works, Amazon has now hired a new showrunner with Anna Ouyang Moench taking on that job after working as a writer on Apple TV‘s award-winning and mega-popular sci-fi series “Severance” and an executive producer on the second season of Netflix‘s “Beef.”
That creative shake-up update comes to us from Variety as Moench takes over the show’s reins from co-creator Francesca Sloane, and the report also reminds us that none of the cast from the first season are “currently” expected to return.

Those names are Donald Glover (co-created with Sloane), Maya Erskine, Michaela Cole, John Turturro, Alexander Skarsgård, Sarah Paulson, and Parker Posey. Of course, this suggests that the high-profile action streaming series will be seeking a new string of talented actors to play roles, and we can’t wait to see who they end up selecting.
“Anna is a phenomenal storyteller with an incredible ability to balance character-driven drama, sharp humor, and emotional depth,” Peter Friedlander, the global head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, said in an official statement. “Her work on ‘Beef’ and ‘Severance’ speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled to have her at the helm of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Season Two as she builds on the series’ compelling world and pushes it into exciting new territory for our global Prime Video customers.”
An official logline for the series from Prime:
Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?
Written/created by Simon Kinberg, “Mrs. & Mrs. Smith” was originally the Doug Liman-directed action comedy film from 2005 starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (the two first met during the shoot, before later marrying and getting divorced) as a run-of-the-mill suburban couple, who secretly work as skilled assassins throughout their marriage.
