Samara Weaving Reflects On Almost Landing ‘Scream’ Lead, Could Have Been “Super Butterfly Effect” Putting ‘Ready Or Not 2’ In Question

The filmmaking team of Radio Silence (including directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) and actress Samara Weaving have reunited for the sequel to horror satire “Ready or Not” with “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” coming to theaters i One of the more interesting what-ifs in the world of modern horror was that Weaving nearly ended up being cast in the lead role of Samantha Carpenter, which went to former franchise star Melissa Barrera.

During a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly to promote her upcoming horror sequel, Weaving shared her feelings about the would-be “sliding doors” moment with the “Scream” role that didn’t come together. Mentioning that joining that pic may have led to a “super bufferfly effect” that could have meant that “Ready or Not 2” never happened.

“I know! That was really tough. I think I had just done so many horrors. I had something [else]. I can’t really remember, but I do think everything happened for a reason. But that is something that I go, ‘Hmm. What could’ve been?’ But who knows? Maybe if I did it, I would’ve, I don’t know, lost my mind and killed someone or something. We could’ve had a huge fight and a falling out, and then ‘Ready or Not 2’ wouldn’t have happened. Super butterfly effect.”

Weaving ultimately joined the franchise with a small part in “Scream VI” (you can watch that isolated scene below), and the Aussie actress explained how that came together, “They rang me, and they were like, ‘Do you wanna be the Drew Barrymore opening?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah, I do!’ You joking?! So fun.”

What the future holds for the “Scream” franchise remains to be seen as “Scream 7” writer and director Kevin Williamson (brought on to help with pivots after casting and director shakeups in the wake of the controversial firing of Barrera) has stated in an interview from this month he isn’t planning on returning for “Scream 8 (despite the solid box office success of “Scream 7,” an eigth film has yet to be greenlit by Spyglass Media).
