Charlie Cox Says Punisher Isn’t In ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2, Attempts To Deny A ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Appearance

Between filming scenes for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and a “Punisher” special presentation for Disney+, it looks like Jon Bernthal won’t be appearing as Frank Castle in the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again.”

Charlie Cox, appearing on ABC‘s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” was asked about the “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” trailer and if he’d be showing up in the sequel after playing Matt Murdock in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (who was Peter Parker’s lawyer).

When directly asked if he was in the movie, Cox’s response was a little wishy-washy: “No. But if I was in the movie, I’d also say no, to be clear. But I’m not in the movie…But I could be lying. I’m definitely not. I’m not lying. But I was in the last one, I was in ‘Now Way Home.'” This comes after speculation that Daredevil could be in the movie after the inclusion of notable villains, The Hand (skilled ninja criminals that wear red and are established adversaries of Murdock and other Marvel heroes), and various theories/rumblings online.

“Now we know why he wasn’t, he was gallivanting with Spider-Man the entire time,” Cox said, referring to Bernthal’s Punisher not being in this season of “Daredevil: Born Again” and the blunt reasoning behind that.

Bernthal’s absence was reiterated by Cox’s co-star Vincent D’Onofrio in a social media post. “If [Jon] wasn’t busy making his own hour-long ‘Punisher’ [special presentation] and hangin with that insect, we would have wanted him to join us in Season 2 for sure. Yet he had a wonderful opportunity to do the other projects, and I, for one, can’t wait to see him in those.” Also, D’Onofrio, adding his own frustration that the character Kingpin can’t appear in “Spider-Man” films, says it’s a “complicated rights issue” that Sony and Marvel can’t seem to iron out.
