‘The Getaway’: Netflix Reunites With ‘Adolescence’ Helmer Philip Barantini On Remake Of Steve McQueen & Sam Peckinpah Heist Pic

Philip Barantini, the director behind the acclaimed and award-winning Netflix series “Adolescence,” is reuniting with the streaming giant for a remake of the 1972 Sam Peckinpah-directed (“The Wild Bunch”) crime flick “The Getaway” that starred Steve McQueen (“The Great Escape”) and Ali McGraw (“Love Story”).

That’s not it, as news on the exciting remake hailing from The Hollywood Reporter adds that it’ll have a script worked on by screenwriter Peter Craig (“The Batman,” “The Town,” “Dope Thief”), who was previously tapped for Barantini’s “Rabbit, Rabbit” hostage series at Netflix and has “Paper Tiger” actor Adam Driver leading. Notably, Craig produced the streamer’s recent offering, “Remarkably Bright Creatures.”

“A twisty two-handed as an ex-con and his wife, who rob a Texas bank as a condition for the man’s release. After a deadly double-cross, the couple is forced to go on the run as spurned thieves, violent thugs, and the police all give chase across an overheated state.”

The original installment featuring a criminal husband and wife team set to rob a bank had a script penned by veteran filmmaker Walter Hill (helped to co-write, produce and continue the “Alien” franchise, with a recent script for a new take on “Alien 5), known for his own directorial work in the action/thriller genre with “The Warriors,” “48 Hrs.,” and his landmark ’70s crime flick “The Driver,” starring Ryan O’Neal.

A producing team assembled will consist of Craig with partner Bryan Unkeless via their banner Night Owl Stories, Andrew Mittman (1.21), alongside Barantini and Samantha Beddoe (It’s All Made Up).

This wouldn’t be the first time “The Getaway” has been given the remake treatment, as Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger led the 1994 version. With that all said, we’ll have to be patient to learn about any casting with this being in the early stages, and who will be tapped for that husband and wife duo at the center of the story is going to be a mystery for the time being.

Another project in the works between Netflix and Barantini is a series based on the buzzy working-class play “Eat The Rich,” although we’re unclear if “The Getaway” will impact that one.
