Before Fox‘s merger with Disney, Ryan Reynolds had been planning on reprising the Wade Wilson role in Drew Goddard‘s gestating “X-Force” (an unmade project) ahead of a third solo “Deadpool” installment, but plans changed, and Marvel Studios pushed forward with Shawn Levy‘s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Hugh Jackman in tow back as the titular X-Men hero) placing “X-Force” into limbo alongside other Marvel films like the “Gambit” movie.
We’ve been hearing about Reynolds quietly developing the next Deadpool romp with talk of another team-up, which is now being backed up by the Canadian actor himself in a new interview. During that chat over the weekend on “Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist,” it sounds like they’re, again, looking to pair Wade up with other characters rather than pursuing a traditional solo entry, as he’s better suited as a supporting player among a group.
When directly asked about Deadpool’s future, Reynolds responded with, “I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I’m going to center him again. I think he’s a supporting character, you know? He’s a guy who is great in a group.”
What that next feature attempt looks like is a little less clear. In the comic books, Deadpool has been a member of teams like the aforementioned “X-Force” (which could easily be revived with a different lineup, Wolverine, and Psylocke have been on rosters with Wilson in more recent takes on the team) and has been part of an iteration of the “Thunderbolts” alongside folks like The Punisher, Elektra, Red-Hulk, and Agent Venom. Being a Canadian mutant could also allow a minor opening for a group like Alpha Flight, finally making their big screen debut (after appearing on the Fox animated series in the 1990s).
Another idea could be Wade reuniting with characters from The Multiverse/The Void, with Dafne Keen‘s Laura and Jackman’s Logan now calling his universe home after the events of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” We don’t know what’s bouncing around Reynolds’ head for the time being, and speculation will have to fill that spot until we learn more official details.
All that said, given that the last R-rated movie earned a massive $1.338 billion at the global box office, there is certainly an incentive from all concerned to get another film into theaters, and it will likely be able to keep its mature edge as audiences have fully embraced that tone.
Feel free to watch that full exchange with Reynolds below.
