‘The Mummy’: Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz Legacy Horror Sequel From Radio Silence Arriving May 2028

After the revelation that Radio Silence would be behind a new legacy horror film set in “The Mummy” universe, starring original actors Brendan Fraser (“Rental Family”) and Rachel Weisz (“Black Widow”) to reprise their roles in a new feature that would retcon the events of “The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor” (which had recast Weisz with Maria Bello), there is now an update on when fans and general audiences alike can expect the film to be unleashed on the big screen.

Universal Pictures has now announced (via THR) that the new action-adventure horror flick with comedic beats will be heading to theaters on May 19, 2028. Giving directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett plenty of time to get this new movie shot and completed. Screenwriter David Coggeshall (“The Family Plan,” “Orphan: First Kill”) has been tasked to pen the screenplay for this new “Mummy” adventure.

The second movie, “The Mummy Returns,” established Alex O’Connell, the young smart-mouthed son of Evie and Jack, who will likely need to be recast with a new adult actor. That film also helped establish Dwayne Johnson‘s Scorpion King (with some of the worst VFX shots you could imagine from the early 2000s), which led to his own spinoff film. It is unclear if Universal or Radio Silence has any intention of bringing Johnson back as the hulking heroic figure turned villain in some flashback or supernatural way.

Radio Silence’s other credits include helping to resurrect Wes Craven‘s “Scream” franchise with the two previous installments, “Ready or Not,” the vampire heist thriller “Abigail,” and their latest project, “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” will be released in theaters on March 20, 2026.

Tackling another legacy project isn’t all that surprising, as they were once attempting to add some new life into a soft-reboot of “Escape From New York” at 20th Century Studios, before moving on to other things, and development had seemingly hit pause.
