Actress Emilia Clarke is coming off the C.I.A. Cold War era series “Ponies” on Peacock, and has lined up a new horror film, “When Darkness Loves Us,” that hails from Kiwi writer/director James Ashcroft.
Variety dished that news on the project, aiming to be released sometime next year by Bleecker Street after buying it up, as Clarke leads a cast that also features Marlon Williams (“Sweet Tooth”), Victoria Pedretti (“You”), and Natascha McElhone (“Ronin”).

An adaptation of the Elizabeth Engstrom novella published in the 1980s, Ashcroft co-wrote the “When Darkness Loves Us” script with Hayley Sproull and Eli Kent. Ashcroft has most recently worked with high-profile actors Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott, and Michael Keaton on his Netflix crime thriller “The Whisper Man.”
The film’s brief logline mentioned by the outlet:
“The story follows a young woman (Clarke) who, after surviving 15 years trapped in an underground cave system, returns to the surface to reclaim the family she believes is hers, no matter the monstrous cost.”
Another feature film project from the former “Game of Thrones” actress includes the upcoming Drake Doremus-directed romantic drama “Next Life” co-starring with Édgar Ramírez and Jack Farthing. Clarke had dipped her toes into the world of superheroes, playing a Skrull named G’iah (Talos’ daughter) in Marvel Television‘s “Secret Invasion,” which saw her working with Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Olivia Colman on the Disney+ project (although we’re not entirely sure we’ll be seeing Clarke return to the MCU anytime soon).
That’s not it for genre TV, as the busy actress was cast as Mallory in the Prime Video series adaptation of Ed Brubaker‘s comic book “Criminal,” which also has Charlie Hunnam, Richard Jenkins, Luke Evans, Adria Arjona, and others among the cast. We’re still waiting on an official release date from Prime concerning “Criminal.”
While “When Darkness Loves Us” is arriving in 2027, Bleecker Street has yet to announce a concrete date for it.
