Ahead of the film’s official launch later this month, the press screenings for James Cameron‘s third installment in his Pandora saga, “Avatar: Fire & Ash,” have led to a stream of first reactions to the epic sci-fi action event film making their way online.
Many of the reactions are mostly positive, with the main highlights of the movie being the technical aspects of the visual effects and action set pieces (something expected), but a handful of those reactions point out that some are still unimpressed with the film’s story/narrative, which comes off as unsatisfying to a portion of the folks who watched the movie.
Below is a round-up of some of the online reactions, including one from our very own Rodrigo Perez:
‘Avatar: Fire & Ash’: don’t bet against Cameron & yet he finally stumbles w/part 3. It’s another technical marvel w/ great action/set pieces, but its plot/story is tired & rehash. Feels like Way Of Water Part 2 or the next episode. Still worth seeing but temper expectations. pic.twitter.com/fdRwAxMjOK

Unlike the previous two installments, the awe and wonder of discovering new corners of Pandora has faded in #AvatarFireAndAsh, replaced by a handful of set pieces that feel like retreads. And like many third entries, it struggles to be much more than set up for a big finale.

With #AvatarFireAndAsh master storyteller and visionary filmmaker James Cameron again delivers a hyperreal experience that is emotional and exhilarating. Repeatedly and exhaustively raising its own bar, this is an audacious feast that delivers more than anyone ordered. #Avatar pic.twitter.com/RrkGINBrpO

#AvatarFireAndAsh The team who worked on this really knocked the visual effects out of the park. It’s such a spectacle. Get ready for Oona Chaplin as Varang. She is a standout! pic.twitter.com/LfoUXO2sn6

#AvatarFireandAsh is a wild example of maximalist sci-fi filmmaking. It’s the biggest and boldest of the films, boasting the franchise’s most impressive and innovative set pieces yet. (One aerial battle is the coolest I’ve see. In years). I ate good at James Cameron’s table. pic.twitter.com/2QEmr6wvn3

#AvatarFireAndAsh: 3 films in, James Cameron still has the sauce, making the epic spectacular feel emotionally impactful. A glorious saga. Bold, brilliant & awesome in every way, this is what movie theaters were built for. Payakan is still my fave, but Varang is the MVP. pic.twitter.com/zs1BjCTYmZ

#AvatarFireAndAsh feels like the perfect closing chapter for the Sully family… and an equally perfect beginning for what comes next. It’s a breathtaking epic that stuns with awe inspiring beauty, through emotional dark storytelling, and expands Pandora in ways that I needed pic.twitter.com/BzCDFQSLKv

#AvatarFireAndAsh is so wildly, unfathomably epic, ambitious, and audacious in every single way, you can't help but forgive that it has some noticeable flaws.

It grabs you and sweeps you up in this snowball of emotion, action, and spectacle as only James Cameron can deliver. pic.twitter.com/iLLDSskFEG
We all thought James Cameron was making his Star Wars, #AvatarFireAndAsh cements it as his Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (highly complimentary). This is so At World's End coded & Cameron has fully embraced the anime & video game inspos even more proudly here. A nonstop series… pic.twitter.com/pDOQNgaEKz

#AvatarFireAndAsh is huge on visual spectacle, especially in 3D. Deeper exploration of Pandora & new tribes allow for immense world-building. Story may be lacking, but this pushes technical boundaries in unimaginable ways. Plus it has out-of-this-world action. #Avatar #FireAndAsh pic.twitter.com/IeZGoaQfp0

#AvatarFireAndAsh delivers the franchise's trademark stunning visuals, but it's also the most bloated entry yet. The dialogue often makes you cringe, and the story essentially devolves into an episode of "My Two Dads" meets James Cameron's take on "A Pyromaniac's Love Story." $$$ pic.twitter.com/1sdpTmSbd3

Three films in and I still can’t get over how magical the #Avatar movies are. Wish I had more original phrasing, but this applies too well — #AvatarFireAndAsh truly feels like a ride. I couldn’t believe how quickly I was pulled back into the world of Pandora and swept up in the… pic.twitter.com/TdmAxp4ELQ

James Cameron has raised the bar again with #AvatarFireAndAsh, a darker installment than the previous two but packs an emotional punch like few other blockbuster filmmakers can. Visually stunning, logically insane, bold in almost every way. A mesmerizing sci-fi, war spectacle! pic.twitter.com/tVBXTCgcpN

Happy to report #AvatarFireAndAsh is the best film of the franchise (so far). Jaw-dropping visuals aside, it boasts some of the best action of Cameron’s career & one of the best movie villains in years: Oona Chaplin’s Varang. She & Stephen Lang’s chemistry set the film ablaze! 🔥 pic.twitter.com/qgbcF0aX61

This was an overtly sexual movie. Why is this movie so horny? Why?
Many issues. All over the place. Long. Entertaining, but dragged. Visual stunning.
It's going to make so much $.

#AvatarFireAndAsh is a damn good James Cameron movie! What else do you need to know?? Go see it in 3-D in the best theater you can find because it’ll blow your mind. That’s what JC does. Every bit as gorgeous as you’d expect, Fire and Ash is also easily the most INTENSE Avatar… pic.twitter.com/uW5M476NKW

#AvatarFireandAsh is freakin’ epic! Cameron delivers another sci-fi spectacle that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. The film is monumental, taking full advantage of its 3hr 15min runtime, which flies by. Plus, Stephen Lang and Oona Chaplin rock as the villains! pic.twitter.com/kAkssqVKpA

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH: an emotionally powerful, terrifically directed and visually incredible movie, with some of the most compelling storytelling and action of the series yet, building on the characters–old and new–and the world in fascinating ways. #AvatarFireAndAsh is a THUNDEROUS cinematic event! The Ash tribe is as mesmerizing as they are terrifying. James Cameron once again reshapes what’s possible on screen, unveiling some of the most BREATHTAKING VISUALS of the decade. Watch it in @IMAX! pic.twitter.com/VfZ09O74uF

This new installment has a script co-written by Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver with a cast that consists of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, David Thewlis, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Brendan Cowell, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, Duane Evans, Jr., and Kate Winslet.
With “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.
A lot is riding on the success of the movie at the global box office, as Cameron has alluded to the movie needing to make a boatload of cash for Disney for them to move forward with the next two planned films, “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5.” While also musing at times that he may consider handing off directing duties to someone else (potentially to pursue other gestating projects) and stay on as a producer/overseer, but that all remains to be seen, and we should know by now not to underestimate the public’s hunger for these films.
The pic is officially heading to theaters on December 19 by 20th Century Studios, so stay tuned for The Playlist’s full review of “Avatar: Fire & Ash.”
