‘Seance On A Wet Afternoon’: Matthew Macfadyen Joins Rachel Weisz In Tomas Alfredson’s Medium Thriller Penned By Jack Thorne

Filming on director Tomas Alfredson‘s latest feature film “Seance On A Wet Afternoon” has started in the United Kingdom as we’ve learned that “Succession” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” actor Matthew Macfadyen has taken a co-lead role opposite Rachel Weisz (“The Favourite”), who plays a “medium” that ends up placing herself in a kidnapping plot to present herself as having supernatuality abilities only for things to go south.

“Seance On A Wet Afternoon” is a remake of the 1964 Bryan Forbes film (based on the Mark McShane novel of the same name that starred Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough) and has a script from Jack Thorne, the Emmy-winning writer and co-creator of the mega-popular Netflix series “Adolescence.”

An official synopsis for the new Alfredson thriller provided to us:

Myra (Weisz), a self-proclaimed medium, convinces her husband, Billy (MacFadyen), to kidnap the son of a wealthy family so she can lead the police to the “missing” child and legitimize her psychic abilities. When Myra’s true intentions come to light, however, Billy realizes her plan threatens to consume them both.

Aflredson is the Swedish filmmaker, known for his striking visuals, behind films such as the vampire thriller “Let The Right One In,” the Gary Oldman-led spy drama “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” based on the John le Carré novel, and the Jo Nesbø adaptation “The Snowman,” which starred Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson.

Speaking of John le Carré, MacFadyen is also part of the cast of “Legacy of Spies,” which sees the actor featured alongside Charlie Hunnam, Daniel Brühl, and Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu in the series from showrunner Stephen Cornwell (“The Night Manager,” “The Little Drummer Girl”), MGM+, and the BBC.

We’re cautiously optimistic about “Seance On A Wet Afternoon” as it been a hot minute since Alfredson helmed a feature, and his last effort was the 2020 heist comedy “Se upp för Jönssonligan” (“Watch Out For The Jönsson League”), the 15th installment in an existing and popular local film franchise. But the creative combo of Thorne and Alfredson is hard to overlook.
