Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti were brought back to help flesh out an HBO Max spinoff series focused on Pennywise from their two-part feature adaptations based on the iconic Stephen King novel. “IT: Welcome To Derry,” their prequel show, has been quite popular, but audiences are still waiting for an official renewal.
Speaking with Collider to promote the new film “They Will Kill You,” producer/developer Barbara Muschietti sounds not only optimistic about getting that second season (there had been chatter that their main plan with “IT: Welcome To Derry” was a three-season arc), but is very aware of how popular the project already is.

“A lot of times, the announcements are the studio having to declare their confidence for the show. We don’t need that because clearly we’re good. So, when we do the green light, it’s a real green light. It’s not just like, ‘Okay, well, we’ll try to put this out so people watch the show.’ People have watched the show. It’s good,” Muschietti commented on the horror show’s current status.
One of the more interesting aspects of “IT: Welcome To Derry” (showrun by Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane) was the attempt to connect the TV project to the greater King universe by adding a young Dick Hallorann, played by Chris Chalk, into the mix, a character that originates from “The Shining.” We’re curious if Season 2, when announced, will attempt to incorporate more crossover elements into the small town of Derry (we assume that will come down to whether HBO Max has the rights to use certain material secured by Warner Bros. or not).
While we wait patiently for that Season 2 greenlight (expected to go even further into the past), the upcoming Kirill Sokolov-directed “They Will Kill You” starring Zazie Beats is hitting screens on March 25.
