Filming is underway in Rome, Italy, on Bertrand Bonello‘s latest film “Santo Subito!“, which already stars Mark Ruffalo as Father Joseph Murolo, an American-born priest summoned by the Vatican to help with an investigation of Pope John Paul II‘s life as he’s being considered for sainthood/canonization by the Catholic Church.
Variety is reporting that veteran actress Charlotte Rampling is set to play Polish-born American philosopher Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka in the Vatican thriller. A longtime friend of Pope John Paul II, who exchanged intimate letters with the pontiff.

Most will likely be aware of Rampling’s work on the Denis Villeneuve “Dune” movies, alongside other feature projects such as “Red Sparrow,” “Never Let Me Go,” “The Night Porter,” “Melancholia,” and the Paul Verhoeven-directed erotic nun flick “Benedetta.”
“Santo Subito!” has a script that was co-written by Thomas Bidegain, the Oscar-nominated co-screenwriter of the Netflix release “Emilia Perez.” Set after the pontiff’s death in 2005, the thriller follows Ruffalo’s Murolo as he “navigates a moral labyrinth during interviews with various confidantes and witnesses that ultimately put the priest’s own faith to the test,” which sounds a lot like it may attempt to be in the vein of “Conclave,” just with a slightly altered narrative.
Other actors named for the project include Andrzej Chyra (“Leave No Traces”) as Pope John Paul II, Cezary Żak (“No Pressure”), Marisa Borini, Adam Bessa (“Harka”), and Anton Lesser (“Wolf Hall”).
Interestingly enough, Ruffalo recently played a priest-turned-FBI agent in the acclaimed HBO Max crime thriller series “Task.” His other notable work connected to the Catholic Church was the heartwrenching investigative drama “Spotlight,” which saw a group of dedicated journalists at the Boston Globe expose a global scheme by the Church to move and hide priests who had sexually assaulted and abused children.
