Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) has found her next feature project with “Sweat,” a remake of a Polish psychological thriller that was originally helmed by Magnus von Horn, which sees the Cuban-born actress playing a fitness influencer and will be helmed by British filmmaker J Blakeson.
In this English-language iteration revealed by Deadline, de Armas is set to play rising “fitness influencer Emma Kent, who dreams of matching the success of her idol, social media superstar Kat Highbrook. Her carefully curated world begins to collapse when an encounter with Kat goes horribly wrong, and she is forced into a dangerous arrangement with Trent, an obsessive fan. His unhinged devotion pushes her to choose how far she’s willing to go for fame.”

Blakeson is an excellent choice to tackle a project like “Sweat” after previous female-driven projects wading in the waters of thriller material like Rosmund Pike‘s elder abuse satire “I Care A Lot” and underrated kidnapping pic “The Disappearance Of Alice Creed,” one of the early projects starring Gemma Arterton.
Armas, who earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for playing a version of Marilyn Monroe, is coming off a less-than-stellar box office result for her “John Wick” spinoff, “Ballerina.” Despite her being fun to watch in the mixed bag action pic directed by Len Wiseman, it is unclear if she’ll be asked to reprise the Eve Macarro role again. But there could be plenty of ways for Eve to show up in other franchise entries like “John Wick 5” and the gestating Donnie Yen-directed spinoff set in Hong Kong featuring his skilled assassin, Caine.
Some other titles from de Armas’ film credits include “Blade Runner 2049,” “The Gray Man,” co-starred with Ben Affleck in the erotic thriller “Deeper,” the first installment of Rian Johnson‘s “Knives Out” trilogy, Ron Howard‘s “Eden,” and the final James Bond outing for Daniel Craig, “No Time To Die.”
Guy Stodel is producing under the Rosto Inc., alongside Blakeson via his Crimple Beck and AGC Chairman and CEO Stuart Ford (will be distributed internationally by AGC International), with WME Independent, CAA Media Finance, and AGC co-repping the film’s US rights.
Filming on “Sweat” is said to begin on March 30, with locations to include both Los Angeles and the United Kingdom. Sounds like it’s going to be one to keep an eye on; however, we’re going to have to wait a tad longer to learn who will be playing that Kat character and what other actors will be joining the project as additional casting is underway.
