‘Impunity’: Sebastian Stan & Ana de Armas Topline Legal Espionage Thriller From ‘The Settlers’ Director Felipe Gálvez

We have yet another tantalizing-sounding project heading to the Cannes Film Market with “Impunity,” an espionage thriller from Chilean filmmaker Felipe Gálvez (“The Settlers”) with two Hollywood heavyweights toplining the pic.

Variety reports that the gestating spy flick has landed Oscar-nominees Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) and Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) for the main roles (the pair will also executive produce), neither of whom is a stranger to the genre. Based on “38 Londres Street” by Philippe Sands, the film will incorporate both English and Spanish languages, with filming expected to take place in Chile, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The outlet also shared the following logline for the movie that has a script from Mariano Llinás and Antonia Girardi:

“Set against the backdrop of one of the legal cases of the 20th century, when Augusto Pinochet was arrested in London in 1998. For the first time, a former dictator could lose his immunity and face justice beyond his own country. As two covert operations unfold behind closed doors, a mercenary recruited by an NGO and a Chilean envoy are drawn into a labyrinth of conspiracies, betrayals, and geopolitical maneuvering — only to discover, at their own expense, that the real battle for justice is fought far from the courtroom, in the shadows.”

Armas previously appeared as a green CIA operative in Daniel Craig‘s final outing as James Bond in “No Time To Die,” a supporting player in The Russo Brothers‘ “The Gray Man,” and got her own “John Wick” spinoff film, playing an on-the-rise assassin in “Ballerina.”

Meanwhile, Stan has been moving in and outside the black ops/spy genre with his Bucky Barnes role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a slew credits such as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier,” “Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers,” and will be seen next in “Avengers: Doomsday” this December. He also has a film in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with “Fjord” from director Cristian Mungiu.

“I grew up listening to unfinished stories, conversations interrupted by fear,” said Gálvez in an official statement. “With ‘Impunity’ I want to explore the pages erased from our history. Using the language of the spy genre, not to celebrate conspiracies, but to reveal how justice itself can be negotiated, delayed, and turned into spectacle.” His previous film, “The Settlers,” had its world premiere at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard back in 2023.

Others among the cast include Alfredo Castro (“The Club”), Antonia Zegers (“Too Late to Die Young”), and Alejandro Goic. Also, it will be lensed by “Heads or Tails” cinematographer Simone D’Arcangelo.

“Impunity” is produced by Rei Pictures‘ Spanish arm, the United Kingdom-based Quiddity, Chilean outfit Ronda Cine, and Les Films du Worso from France, alongside Zeta Studios in Spain, Snowglobe in Denmark, and Pathé in France, which is also handling international sales and distribution for France, Switzerland, and Benelux.
