Actress Dakota Johnson (“Materialists”) is set to play an android on a journey and on the run for director Angus MacLane in a new near-future sci-fi movie heading to the American Film Market (launching the yearly sales event) called “Trudy Blue,” with a script from “Bubble & Squeak” (premiered earlier this year at Sundance) writer/director Evan Twohy.
MacLane may sound familiar as he was recently tasked to direct and co-write the Chris Evans-led Buzz Lightyear survival action movie “Lightyear” for Pixar/Disney, a spinoff of the “Toy Story” franchise. He also co-directed the billion-dollar hit “Finding Dory” for the beloved animation studio. Twothy is also said to be working on other various projects for Laika Studios, Esmail Corp, and Amazon MGM Studios.

The main elevator pitch for the film via the Deadline report:
“A grounded sci-fi action movie set in the near future, about an outlawed android maid who wakes up in a landfill 2,000 miles from home and must embark on a journey through a now foreign world to get back to where she belongs.”
Johnson isn’t a stranger to more genre-focused films after taking a lead role in Luca Guadagnino‘s “Suspiria” remake of the witchy Dario Argento movie, Drew Goddard‘s “Bad Times at the El Royale,” and dipping her toes into the world of comic book films with S.J. Clarkson‘s “Madame Web.” She is also gearing up to direct her first feature with “A True Tree Is Blue,” with a cast that is expected to include Jessica Alba (“The Killer Inside”), Charli XCX (“100 Nights of Hero”), and her “Cha Cha Real Smooth” co-star Vanessa Burghardt (who also penned the script).
Saks Picture Company’s Alex Saks and TeaTime Pictures‘ Johnson, Ro Donnelly, and Samantha Racanelli are producing “Trudy Blue,” as Legendary‘s 193 will handle international sales, and CAA Media Finance is overseeing the domestic side of things.
