“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” presents more questions than answers, and we’re now learning a little bit more about what is happening to Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker in the fourth installment, and it explains what his life is looking like living on his own while entering his college era.
Entertainment Weekly has revealed some script pages/notes from director Destin Daniel Cretton about the film, which highlight a bleak detail about Peter Parker’s loneliness in the aftermath of Doctor Strange removing his non-superhero persona from the minds of his friends and family (Happy Hogan acting as a surrogate Uncle of sorts in these films, won’t be showing up, according to Jon Favreau while speaking with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!“) via a magic spell.
“All of his tech needs to have been made by Peter,” Cretton writes in those script annotations, as Parker isn’t being bankrolled by Stark Industries anymore, as nobody remembers him. Now, he’s relying on a new AI assistant named E.V. (think J.A.R.V.I.S. or F.R.I.D.A.Y), and she is now “sadly, the closest thing Peter has to a friend.” Adding another unsettling element to Parker’s estranged relationships with MJ and Ned.
That’s not the only gadget at Parker’s disposal, as he also has “3D printer on steroids — something that could be made by a kid genius w/ limited funds.” An interesting add-on here that could allow Parker to keep producing new Spidey tech and might be alluding to a future version of Parker Industries, which was founded by Peter, Sajani Jaffrey, May Parker Jameson, and Jay Jameson in the comics.
Technology isn’t the only thing going on in the film, as there have been some teases/hints that Parker is “mutating” (heroes like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Daredevil are considered mutates, as their mutations were from technology/substance accidents and based on the mutant gene like the X-Men). One of the interesting plotlines from the 1990s cartoon series at Fox Kids was Parker turning into a multi-armed humanoid Spider referred to as Man-Spider (an obvious influence by David Cronenberg‘s “The Fly” remake and also featured a crossover with Frank Castle), and could explain why he’s suddenly being surrounded by organic webbing (Holland’s iteration uses web-shooters he’s created himself).
Another thing mentioned by Cretton is potently hinting at that Man-Spider element, talking about Parker having headaches and changing, possibly not for the better.
“A small, sharp headache…our first inkling that living completely in the shadows is taking its toll on Peter, something is changing, and maybe not for the better,” Cretton wrote.
Jon Bernthal‘s The Punisher and Mark Ruffalo‘s Dr. Bruce Banner (tie-in toys have confirmed he’ll be Hulking out) are showing up as the MCU elements in the Sony pic. There have been multiple scenes with Spidey facing a bunch of ninjas assumed to be part of The Hand, an international criminal syndicate connected to the “Daredevil” series (Charlie Cox did an unconvincing job stating he won’t be showing up in the sequel), and a slew of other Marvel heroes like Wolverine.
Audiences likely cannot wait to get into theaters for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and they won’t have to, as July 31 is just around the corner.
