‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Showrunner Ira Parker Talks Finale Moment That May Impact Events In Season 2

Spoilers ahead for the final episode of Season 1 of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Sunday night gave us the finale of the latest “Game of Thrones” spinoff with “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” ending with Dunk and Egg heading off to their next adventure in the second season (currently filming). One obscure change could ultimately have some serious impact on the events of the next batch of episodes. There is a discussion between Ser Duncan and Egg’s father, Prince Maekar Targaryen, about taking the young prince on the road as his squire, but Maekar is reluctant to allow his royal son live the life of a common peasant. Despite that objection, he still sees the good in Dunk and wants to see the pair continue their training together. Only for Egg to show up at Dunk’s camp, proclaiming he’s been permitted by his father to go with Dunk.

The next scene comes off like another lie, as we end up seeing Maekar searching the Targaryen caravan for Egg, who just may have run away again. Showrunner Ira Parker is talking about that part of the finale and isn’t ready to say if that will have a narrative payoff or not. However, mentioning Egg lying would simply be part of his established antics.

Whether or not Egg has been truly given the blessing to squire for the Hedge Knight is just as obscure in Martin’s novella; “it’s not confirmed canonically” in the original book, Parker told the LA Times in a recent interview. “We haven’t done anything egregious here, I don’t think. [And] I believe it from a character perspective. I believe that Egg would do that again, because he’s already done it. We’ve seen him. He runs away. That’s sort of his thing. And he lies to people.”

The last time he ran away, it led to the events of the Trial of the Seven and the death of Prince Baelor Targaryen (the former heir to the throne), and now Maekar being the new heir means his sons are closer to the line of succession (we already know that Egg becomes a great king and his grandson is the Mad King, the subject of a new stage play at the Royal Shakespear Company in London). One of the reasons Maekar may want to keep some distance between Egg and his cruel older brother, Prince Aerion Targaryen (ultimately the real person behind Baelor’s death), is that Egg attempts to kill him as he sleeps, only for Maekar to essentially stop him by simply being in the room.

Could we see Maekar send out the King’s Guard to search for Egg in Season 2? Well, I guess we’ll have to wait and see if there will be real consequences for the two of them, or if his father accepts that kind of path for Egg, which is going to make him a better ruler in the end.

HBO brass has already confirmed that audiences will be getting two more seasons, while Parker has mentioned George R.R. Martin giving the creative team another 11-12 story outlines that could explore the pair’s exploits beyond the established three novellas.
