Not every goal is scored on the pitch. Actor Diego Luna (“Andor”) has had a longstanding relationship with Netflix, going back to their popular cartel series “Narcos: Mexico,” and is now producing/starring in a new streaming feature film for them called “Mexico 86,” which focuses on the iconic FIFA World Cup event that Mexico hosted back in 1986.
Luna plays Martín de la Torre in the film based on true events of the mega-popular global football tournament with a supporting cast that consists of Karla Souza, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Álvaro Guerrero, Memo Villegas, and Juan Pablo Fernández.
“Mexico 86,” a co-production between Gaumont and Netflix, is directed by Gabriel Ripstein from a script co-written with Daniel Krauze. Ultimately, Argentina won the World Cup by defeating West Germany (the country would reunite with East Germany in 1990, almost a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall).
An official logline courtesy of Netflix:
When a last-minute chance to host the ’86 World Cup appears, a cunning Mexican bureaucrat, armed with nothing but guts and audacity, cons his way through FIFA to beat the United States, but in a country of power games, every victory has a price.
Sidonie Dumas, Nicolas Atlan, and Christian Gabela are the main producers of “Mexico 86,” with Luna also part of the team by serving as executive producer.
“Mexico 86” heads to Netflix on June 5, and you can watch the new trailer below.
