Colin Farrell Says ‘The Batman Part II’ Will “Pick Up” Weeks After Events Of HBO Show, Still Unsure About Returning For More ‘Penguin’ Episodes

We’re still waiting for new casting announcements for Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman Part II,” but in the meantime, actor Colin Farrell, expected to return in a minor role as Oz Cobb, has revealed that the DC Comics sequel is set to pick up “weeks” after the events of the acclaimed HBO series “The Penguin.”

Farrell spoke to ComicBook while promoting his new Netflix movie “Ballad of A Small Player,” the latest from director Edward Berger, and revealed he’s still unsure about a return to a second season of “The Penguin” (despite recently rumblings from Reeves and HBO brass about putting together Season 2 ideas) and gave us the best clue, so far, of where the feature sequel (as he’s one of the few who has actually read the script) is set within the timeline of the show.

“Oh, I don’t know. I have a bit of a, generally speaking, I have a bit of a negativity bias. Apparently, I’ve been told by various people close to me,” Farrell said when asked about the prospect of more episodes of his Gotham-set series. “I would say I would bet against, but not by much. I know that the powers that be are thinking of storylines that could justify another eight hours because it all goes off Matt Reeves’ world. It conveniently worked that the death at the end of ‘The Batman,’ and the devastation within Gotham, opened up a power vacuum that then Oz could try and capitalize on. That was perfect for the parallel eight hours that we had. And then [‘The Batman Part II’] will pick up, whatever, a few weeks after the show ended. But I kind of bet against, but not by a wide mark.”

Not a huge update on the TV front, as Farrell is mostly reiterating what he’s previously said about coming back for a second season. But it does sound like there is a good chance we might end up with a winter-set sequel for Reeves’ “The Batman Part II” as the filmmaker has previously teased a love for Tim Burton‘s Christmas-themed “Batman Returns” in the past on social media and has also recently teased tackling a villain that hadn’t really be done in the films before (leading folks to consider Batman rogues like Hush, Red Hood, Hugo Strange, or someone of that ilk being potential contenders).

There is an expectation that Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Zoë Kravitz, and Andy Serkis will also return alongside Farrell, but Reeves has ruled out Cristin Milioti‘s breakout character, Sofia Falcone, showing up. We don’t exactly know if Paul Dano‘s Riddler or Barry Keoghan‘s Joker will be appearing (the latter was only seen in deleted scenes and is busy shooting Sam Mendes‘ “Beatles” films), but they could certainly shoot around his schedule, given the release date of October 1, 2027, allows them plenty of time to add scenes later on (that’s if they want to even involve the Joker).
