Actors Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets,” “Companion”), Erin Kellyman (“The Great Eleanor,” “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple”), and Joe Alwyn (“The Brutialist,” “Hamnet”) have taken lead roles in a new period thriller set in 17th-century England called “Cavendish.”
In a report hailing from Variety, the feature film project focuses on witchcraft accusations against a young bride and her ruthless pursuit by a witch hunter (deeply religious, fanatical men who used brutal tactics to “prove” women were witches in communities, more often than not leading to their deaths).
Writer-director Christopher Andrews is behind “Cavendish,” which is said to be “blending visceral action with sharp, unexpected humor.” The folks over at Cornerstone will be handling the film’s international sales and distribution, with sales taking place at the Cannes Film Market next month. Also, CAA MeFinance is handling the domestic side of things.
How the outlet describes the original thriller from Andrews: “Set in 1645, the story sees a privileged young bride (Thatcher) accused of witchcraft on her wedding day and pursued by a ruthless witch hunter (Alwyn). Forced into an uneasy alliance with a sharp-witted poacher living on the margins of society (Kellyman), the two women, as per the synopsis, fight back, “turning their powerlessness into strength through violence, wit and defiance.”
Andrews was previously behind the film “Bring Them Down,” a gritty sheep-farming thriller from 2025 starring Barry Keoghan and Christopher Abbott. Filming on “Cavendish” is set to begin production this September on location in Poland.
Ivana MacKinnon and Emily Leo (“How to Have Sex,” “Bring Them Down,” “Beast”) from Wild Swim Films are producing alongside January Films‘ Rosa Attab and Jacqueline De Croy (“You Were Never Really Here,” “I Daniel Blake”). Also, Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska and Bogna Szewczyk-Skupien (“The Brutalist,” “The Testament of Ann Lee”) from Polish production entity Madants. It was developed in collaboration with BBC Film and secured funding from the Polish Film Institute‘s rebate program.
