‘Caine’: Donnie Yen Hong Kong-Set ‘John Wick’ Spinoff Adds ‘Stranger Things’ Actor Dacre Montgomery

Earlier this month, Donnie Yen announced on social media that the production on his “John Wick” spinoff “Caine” had officially started filming and there was a recent casting addition to the action-packed movie set in the world of skilled assassins, as Aussie actor Dacre Montgomery known from “Stranger Things,” “Elvis,” “Dead Man’s Wire,” and “Power Rangers” has been enlisted for a mysterious part (friend or foe?) in the Hong Kong-set action pic.

Montgomery, as reported by Deadline, joins Yen and British-Japanese singer Rina Sawayama in the spinoff as the post-credit scene from “John Wick 4” teed up a clash between Rina’s Akira after Yen’s reluctant blind assassin killed her father (played by “Shogun” Emmy-winner Hiroyuki Sanada) while hunting down John Wick for The High Table (we wouldn’t be entire shocked if the Triads will be explored here, given the setting)

“Caine” has a script from Michael McGrale and Mattson Tomlin, the latter being the co-writer of Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman Part II,” and is also handling the Netflix feature adpatation of the mature immortal Reeves-created comic book ”BRZRKR” that will be helmed by Justin Lin.

Other than that revenge plot, we don’t know what else we can expect from “Caine” or if we’ll see Keanu Reeves make another appearance after showing up in Ana de Armas‘ “Ballerina.” Also, with “John Wick 5” (said to be moving away from The High Table) officially reuniting director Chad Stahelski (currently shooting “Highlander” in Europe and has creative oversight over the “Wick” franchise) and Reeves, there is wiggle-room to have a flashback with Wick or help plant seeds for that fifth installment.

As you might suspect, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are back as producers via their banner Thunder Road. Stahelski (87Eleven Entertainment), Reeves, and John Saunders will also produce, as Yen is not only directing but will serve as an executive producer alongside Courtney Brock.

That’s not it, as “Caine” is also heading to the Cannes Film Market with Lionsgate handling sales, marking one of the bigger high-profile studio projects being sold there.
