‘Marty Supreme’ Star Timothée Chalamet Defends Bizarre Press Tour Antics As Being Done In “The Spirit Of Marty”

This month, audiences finally have access to director Josh Safdie and co-writer Ronald Bronstein (“Uncut Gems”), their latest theatrical offering, “Marty Supreme,” starring recent Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, an ambitious table tennis player and hustler looking for his big break into stardom, and there seems to be a bit of a parallels between himself and Marty going off some more bizarre moments during the promotional press tour for the comedic pic.

Of course, “Marty Supreme” is getting some serious awards buzz, leading to some puzzling press tour moments from Chalamet, from weird avant-garde viral videos, a rap music video with EsDeekid, and what some may feel as ego-stroking hype-up for his acting in a now deleted interview clip (that footage can be seen on Reddit) stating he’s given “top-of-the-line performances” over the last “seven, eight years.”

The would-be Best Actor Oscar contender added the boastful sentiment, “I don’t want people to take it for granted. I don’t want to take it for granted. This is really some top-level shit” and would go on to predict on ABC’s “Good Morning America” he would have an Oscar by next summer, alluding to his chances for the 2026 Oscars (even before nominations have been read).

In a more recent chat with IndieWire, the actor defended his previous comments, “This is in the spirit of Marty, and I feel like this is ultimately an original film at a time when original movies aren’t really put out. It’s a movie about the pursuit of a dream. I’m leaving it on the field. Whether it’s the merch or the Zoom or the media appearances, I’m trying to get this out in the biggest way possible. In the spirit of Marty Mauser.”

The film’s brief logline as provided by A24:

Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.

Others among the cast of the Oscar hopeful include Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher.
