‘Digger’ Reportedly Not Expected For Fall Film Festivals After Cannes Debut For Tom Cruise-Led Pic Ruled Out

Legendary and Warner Bros. had just promoted their upcoming film “Digger” with director Alejandro González Iñárritu and star Tom Cruise on hand at CinemaCon in Las Vegas for the studio’s presentation yesterday. With that promotional push this week, there are more signs that the movie won’t be heading to festivals after a Cannes Film Festival debut was recently ruled out by the folks programming the event ahead of the list of films being announced.

A new report hailing from Deadline is making the claim that Cannes isn’t the only big film festival “Digger” will be skipping the fall ones as well. This would mean we shouldn’t expect to hear that the new Iñárritu movie is screening at Venice, Telluride, Toronto (affectionately known as TIFF), or New York.

However, the big caveat here is that the outlet believes this could change in the coming months. As with anything, many festivals haven’t locked in their programming lineups, allowing some wiggle room for “Digger” to find a spot before its general audience premiere in October.

Not a reported factor here, but “Digger” skipping festivals might have something to do with the mixed-to-poor reception for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” when it debuted last year at Cannes, and could have contributed to the spy film’s soft box office numbers (both “Dead Reckoning” and “The Final Reckoning” dipped significally comapred to “Fallout“). “Digger” is neither a blockbuster franchise event film, but we have to assume word of mouth will be a huge factor in its success and in attracting audiences, or it could be a call made by Cruise himself.

We’re still waiting for some more character and plot information for “Digger,” as there has been talk that it could be similar in tone to something like Stanley Kubrick‘s nuclear war satire “Doctor Strangelove,” and that makes us super excited to learn more about it.

Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman are also among the film’s cast.

That said, Warner Bros. has slated “Digger” for an awards-season-friendly release on October 2, 2026, and the mystery box hype for the film has many exceedingly curious about what a full trailer will look like.
