As mentioned in the character/plot description, Mara is playing a woman named Maris who “dances on the edge of subversion and violence.” A deeply complex woman who explores her capacity to feel love through her relationship with her estranged ten-year-old son, Maxy. However, her nocturnal habits hint at a dangerous violence that lurks beneath the surface.” Meanwhile, Krieps has taken on the part of Alex, “a devoted old flame of Maris. As their relationship re-ignites, Alex’s growing bond with Maxy forces a deadly choice between maternal instinct and romantic obsession.”

HanWay is overseeing the film’s sales at the French event taking place concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival, with Macdara Kelleher and John Keville of Wild Atlantic Pictures producing. Mara is set to serve as an executive producer with WME Independent, focusing on sales on the North American side.

Krieps is likely best known for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s dressmaker drama “Phantom Thread,” where she develops a dark relationship with Daniel Day-Lewis’ character. More recently, she appeared in Jim Jarmusch’sFather Mother Sister Brother” and in the Ryan Murphy series “Monster.”

Mara, of course, is also an accomplished actress in her own right, having landed Oscar nominations for her performances in David Fincher’s remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and Todd Haynes’ acclaimed lesbian romance period film “Carol,” in which she starred opposite Cate Blanchett.

“Quest For Love” marks the third feature effort from Campbell-Hughes, who had recently wrapped production on “High End, with Andrea Riseborough, Guy Pearce, and Raffey Cassidy toplining that film. Their first movie was “It Is In Us All,” in which she also acted (previously seen in projects like “Black Doves”) alongside Cosmo Jarvis (“Shogun,” “Warfare”) and Rhys Mannion. The new film was developed as a joint venture between Screen Ireland and the Luxembourg Film Fund initiative “for female and non-binary filmmakers” which was launched at Cannes back in 2023.
