Every so often, we keep hearing about gestating plans from Disney and mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer to make a new installment in the successful billion-dollar “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. But there is someone you can rule out coming back, and that’s original director Gore Verbinski.
While speaking with ScreenRant in a recent interview, Verbinski was asked about his current desire to get back in the water, but he shared his reasoning why that likely won’t be happening. Mainly, that it might be just “less interesting/dangerous” doing it for a fourth time (alluding to not being entirely thrilled by the prospect of rehashing things he’s already done).

“I wish them the best. I just don’t have anything. I feel like I did three, and, for me, it was a great opportunity to learn and to try something. I think we have to be at a place where the wheels are about to fall off. I think once you kind of know how to do something, it becomes less interesting or less dangerous. There’s just so little time, and there are so many stories to tell,” the director told SR.
To be fair, the filmmaker tackled three of these massive movies with “The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “Dead Man’s Chest,” and “The World’s End” (his final two being shot back-to-back). These aren’t exactly easy projects to make, as most movies shot on water are considered the hardest to film because of all the logistics involved and bloated budgets. Although it sounds like Verbinski is simply not thrilled by the subject matter.
We don’t exactly know what the new brass running Disney is thinking concerning the future of “Pirates of the Caribbean” after taking the reins from Bob Iger. However, there had been development on various options to do a follow-up/reboot, including one that had Margot Robbie circling (possibly playing established character Redd from the Disney theme parks?) and endless rumblings of Johnny Depp returning to the iconic/beloved Jack Sparrow role (the scale of that return remains to be seen).
Verbinski’s latest movie, “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die,” starring Oscar-winnerSam Rockwell, heads to theaters this weekend, and we can’t wait to see what the director does next, even if it’s not related to “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
