After teaming with Sony Pictures on two recent feature installments of the “Ghostbusters” franchise, Jason Reitman is producing the real-time thriller “71 Minutes,” which is based on a spec script penned by screenwriter Ian Shorr.
The project was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, and Reitman is only set to produce through his production banner Ghost Corps (Dan Aykroyd is also involved with the company), but given the film’s brief logline, it might not be “Ghostbusters” related. There had been a bit of a bidding war for Shorr’s original script, with Sony walking away with the project, leaving other suitors in the dust.

“71 Minutes is said to be “a real-time thriller about a man who needs to elude his pursuers in a ticking clock scenario and only has 71 minutes until the sun rises to do so.”
Reitman, at the moment, isn’t expected to helm “71 Minutes,” but that could change as development continues and Sony approves a budget. His recent features include “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Saturday Night” along with co-writing and producing Gil Kenan‘s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”
Shorr was previously behind the adaptation of “Infinite” for director Antonie Fuqua and, more recently, sold another original script to Warner Bros. that has Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) currently directing Keanu Reeves, as production on their sci-fi thriller “Shiver” is underway.
Maybe this original film is vampire-related or inspired by human-hunting films like “The Most Dangerous Game“? We don’t know for sure what the ultimate aim is here, as more concrete details on “71 Minutes” will likely come at a future date.
