Sydney Sweeney Coyly Responds To ‘Bond 26’ Casting Rumors: “I Think I’d Have More Fun As James Bond”

Actress Sydney Sweeney is making the press rounds for her new boxing biopic drama “Christy” coming to theaters on November 7, where she plays a true-life athlete, Christy Martin, and during a recent interview with Variety the subject briefly switched over to Denis Villeneuve‘s “Bond 26” as there had been rumblings she is being considered to play a Bond Girl (female supporting characters, friend and foe, in the James Bond franchise) in Amazon MGM Studios‘ gestating reboot.

During her response, the in-demand actress seemingly stops herself from saying something she’s not supposed to concerning those “Bond 26” rumblings before suggesting she’d have more fun playing the new James Bond.

“I can’t. [Seven-second pause.] I don’t know. [Ten-second pause.] To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumors, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it,” Sweeney said when asked about rumblings she is wanted to play a Bond Girl in Villeneuve’s reboot. But she sounds interested if the stars aligned and the project was tempting creatively. “Depends on the script,” she added. “I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”

Variety also tried to add fuel to the Bond Girl speculation by reminding us that Sweeney recently attended the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, along with the trio’s partnership on a lingerie line (relationships, personal or business, don’t always equal parts in huge films).

While we have to assume that both producers (Amy Pascal and David Heyman) and Villeneuve may have a group of names of would-be supporting actors for “Bond 26,” casting is far off, as they’d have to hire a new James Bond before starting any sort of chemistry readings/auditions. Screenwriter Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) has alluded to only just starting to crack ideas for a script, and there have been reports that we’re likely looking at a “fresh face” actor (potentially tordeoping a laundry list of rumored actors being in the mix).

Will Sweeney ultimately nab a supporting role in “Bond 26”? We’ll just have to be patient as the hunt for a new Bond actor seems to be the priority, at the moment. But we imagine that she could make an interesting choice. We previously saw Ana de Armas take on a fun Bond Girl part as an American agent in Cuba, as seen in “No Time To Die,” and that would lead to her landing her own action flick, “Ballerina,” the “John Wick” spinoff.

That all said, Sweeney had been recently spotted at the same celebrity gun training range facility (Taran Tactical) that de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, and Austin Butler (training for “Miami Vice” or “Heat 2“?) have used in the past to get their action chops up to speed, so she would certainly have the weapons skill-set needed for a gun-toting femme fatale role expected to show up in “Bond 26.”
