Netflix’s New ‘Luther’ Movie From Neil Cross Finally Reunites Idris Elba’s Gruff Detective With Ruth Wilson’s Beloved Femme Fatale Alice

The band is getting back together for a new “Luther” movie at Netflix, as creator/writer Neil Cross, Idris Elba, and Ruth Wilson (“The Affair,” “His Dark Materials”) are coming back for the latest installment heading to the streaming giant. Fans were more than a tad upset when Wilson had previously decided not to be involved with the last “Luther” film titled “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” which had been helmed by Jamie Payne (who is also back for this new movie) and co-starred Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) as Odette Raine.

That big reunion announcement was confirmed by Netflix yesterday, and first revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. They also noted that key supporting cast member Dermot Crowley is back in the role of Luther’s former superior, Martin Schenk.

Wilson plays a methodical neo-noir killer named Alice, who gets the best of Elba’s extremely charming/brilliant Luther, a London homicide detective, only for the two to develop a bit of a tension-filled partnership, and she often goes out of her way to save the big lug from being killed himself. Their on-screen pairing and obvious chemistry are partly why the show became so successful in the first place, alongside an earworm of a theme song provided by the British group Massive Attack (there have been longtime rumors that famed street artist Banksy is a member).

An official synopsis for the original series:

John Luther (Elba) works for the Serious Crime Unit. He is a dedicated policeman and a whirlwind genius. Throughout the series, Luther faces a succession of psychological duels between hunter and hunted, predator and prey. And as the stakes get ever higher and more personal, Luther’s lonely path pulls him towards the edge of temptation.

Cross, you might remember, was one of many screenwriters once tasked to attempt a reboot/sequel of John Carpenter‘s “Escape From New York” for 20th Century Fox (before the Disney merger and the hiring of Radio Silence, who have since exited development) when Robert Rodriguez (“Alita: Battle Angel”) was attached to direct.
