David Ellison‘s Paramount Pictures had recently hired producer Neal H. Moritz for their gestating live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie, and now they’ve revealed a release date for the project that will combine live-action/CGI animation and will be heading to screens on November 17, 2028.
That’s not all, as a mysterious “Sonic The Hedgehog” spinoff movie (referred to in the report from Variety as “Untitled Sonic Event film“) is also landing a concrete date of December 22, 2028, from Moirtz, with “Sonic 4” also set for March 19, 2027. We’ll have to be more patient when it comes to details for that spinoff. Could it be a continuation of the “Knuckles” TV series or a Shadow offshoot? Who knows.
However, the sad news is that neither Seth Rogen nor Evan Goldberg are mentioned as part of the creative team on this new “TMNT” film as they had been previously enlisted to help the studio develop the next live-action feature film after delivering (as co-writers and producers) the well-liked/reviewed animated reboot “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (recently saw the spinoff animated TV series cancelled) and a new holiday themed short film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey” coming to theaters December 19 (a second animated film is supposedly still coming out on September 17, 2027).
What has been scrapped is the R-rated adaptation of the gritty comic book “The Last Ronin,” one of the project casualties of the recent Skydance merger, and likely won’t be resurrected anytime soon.
It’s certainly a little odd that they’re not naming a writer/director for this hybrid “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie, but maybe deals haven’t been officially completed (wouldn’t be the first time a studio established a release date before a director or script was in place). That said, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that Moritz and Paramount at least consider sticking with the recent character designs created for “Mutant Mayhem” over the bizarre versions used in the previous messy Michael Bay-produced live-action films, since they looked really fun dancing around in costumes during this year’s “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” alongside NYC rapper Busta Rhymes.
