Sony Pictures had been gearing up for a production start later this year, as their live-action feature “Helldivers” (announced back in February) based on the popular sci-fi military shooter, had Jason Momoa topline the project with “Fast & Furious” franchise and “Star Trek Beyond” director Justin Lin attached to helm. However, the actor has quietly exited the movie, and the studio will now seek his replacement; no names are being mentioned at this time.
If you weren’t aware, Momoa had been most recently shooting the “A Minecraft Movie” sequel down in New Zealand alongside Jack Black and Kirsten Dunst, being the new addition to the call sheet. Interestingly enough, the report from Deadline is unaware of any reasoning for Momoa’s departure from the Sony film, but there is a good chance that, given James Gunn‘s “Man of Tomorrow” is filming over the summer in Atlanta, he might end up being tasked to be part of that shoot at some point (our own speculation, mind you).

We’ve already seen his “Supergirl” co-star, Milly Alcock, confirmed for an appearance via DC Studios‘ Peter Safan, and it would be hardly a surprise to have Momoa’s Lobo in the cosmic-focused event sequel, as he’s able to brawl with Kryptonians and others just as powerful. Then again, another possibility could be that Legendary/Warner Bros. needed Momoa to clear his year for “A Minecraft Movie Squared” (stranger things have happened).
“Helldivers” is a mature video game that leans into the satirical fascist colonizer angle of the 1997 “Starship Troopers” movie (Sony is also working on a reboot with Neill Blomkamp directing), as humans armed to the teeth with various weapons not only face deadly bug-like aliens but also sentient robots looking to wipe them out as well.
On deck for Momoa, he has “Supergirl” coming out on June 26 (already doing press tour for the DCU pic) and also plays Blanka in Legendary‘s new “Street Fighter” movie arriving in theaters in October. “Helldivers” was slotted by Sony for a release date of November 10, 2027, and it doesn’t seem like the casting shake-up is going to impact that.
